Join us as we launch our pilot program for our Online Build Your Style Course. We will help you to navigate how to improve your freestyle stroke or even learn to swim freestyle from scratch!

This course has been designed to take you step by step to learn and build your freestyle in a logical and progressional way. We focus on the practical how tos and drills to build and advance your stroke with strong foundations, but also provide you with the why we swim like this and not like we once thought freestyle should be swum!

The course is led by our head coach and adult swimming expert, Jo Kyriazakos (aka Mermaid). She will be there every step of the way, she will scaffold your freestyle journey to make you the best and most comfortable swimmer possible. By learning online, you can go at your own pace, repeat the material if needed or take the practical sessions poolside as well.

During the pilot program, you will also get personalised guidance and feedback from Jo herself during the weekly live calls that will be recorded and available on demand. Next live session course starts 2nd of August! Start the course whenever you like and go through the lessons at your own pace and back up your learnings with the live sessions in a few weeks time!

Swimming Fundamentals
In just 4 lessons and over 30 videos of online swim education you will learn how to improve your freestyle or even learn freestyle from scratch.

We will take you through the importance of breathing, how to incorporate your stroke around your breath, body positioning and balance so you don't sink and rely on your kicking to keep you afloat, timing of your stroke for balance, coordination and how to gain power and momentum with every stroke you take.

We teach with both swim science and practical drills and skills your body is designed to move in the most natural way possible, to help you dive head first into your swimming journey.


Discover the Ocean & You
We really do love what we do and get excited about the huge benefits swimming has on both the body and the mind. Freestyle can not only be used to improve your body fitness and stamina but your mental fitness and clarity too. It is a form of meditative practice which also gets the endorphins pumping.

We have a saying at Salty Fit that we live by, 'you never regret a swim.' At Salty Fit, we have taught thousands of people to learn to swim and to be able to swim in the ocean.

This is why we teach you the strongest possible freestyle in our swim teaching tool kit, so you can take your swimming practice to the ocean or any location that involves water, be it a lake, the sea or a pool. If you can swim in the ocean, you can swim anywhere.

You set the pace
The beauty with learning online is you get to choose when and where you study and practice your swimming.

You will need to be in the pool to practice the drills of course, and you can come back to the theory at any time. As an added bonus for the pilot course, during the month of June, we will incorporate a weekly live meeting where you will get to check-in with your very own swim coach and discuss your learnings and also get feedback on your swimming journey.

What to expect from the Online Course

The course provides lectures on the theory of each skill, we explain the why, how and troubleshoot each stage of building the freestyle stroke. Videos demonstrate and explain how the drills are to be performed, checklists to help you check you are on track at each stage; correspondence coaching and weekly live meetings to connect with your coach and learn with a community of fellow swimmers.

There are four main lessons within the course, each lesson is designed as a building block to developing the freestyle stroke. Each lesson contains various drills to assist you in building each skill in to order achieve the particular movement required in building the stroke in a logical progression.

We order the lessons in the following stages to build the freestyle stroke in a clear and logical step by step formula:

Lesson 1: Fundamentals of Breathing (incorporating an efficient breath into your stroke now matter the speed you will be swimming down the track!

Lesson 2: Timing and Coordination (ensuring our stroke fits around our ever important breath and we can maintain good balance whilst we breath or simply move along the water)

Lesson 3: Body Position and Balance (utilizing our body to maintain good floatation and balance in the water rather than work our arms and legs in order to float!)

Lesson 4: Power and Momentum (now we are going places and utilizing the smarts of our own biomechanics and physiology to move us through the water with ease and power!)

If there is someone you want to teach you to swim it's Jo.

Joanna Kyriazakos (aka Mermaid) Founder: Joanna was given the nickname Mermaid over two decades ago, by locals when she came onto the scene teaching people to swim at the local ocean pool and in the surf at Bondi Beach. She has competed in & placed in Ocean Swim races, Surf Life Saving Titles for race mal and ironwoman events & completed crossings of the famous Molokai to Oahu paddleboard race. She is also the operator of 2 other ocean sports businesses – Mermaid Swim Academy | WATSSUP WatsonsBay Stand Up Paddling.
